The best thing about Ciphernote isn’t that it is a user friendly note-taking application that you can use to easily jot down ideas. No, the best thing about Ciphernote is that it puts a lot of focus on privacy and security: all the notes you store within Ciphernote are encrypted; access to Ciphernote is protected by a master password; a secret key is required to sign into your account from new devices; encryption is used to protect notes when they’re synced across devices; the developer doesn’t store any information about you.

To get Ciphernote up and running on a Windows PC, you’ll have to do three things. Number one, download and install the Ciphernote application. Number two, sign up for a Ciphernote account. And number three, log into your account and start using Ciphernote.

Access to Ciphernote is protected with a master password and with a secret account key. The password prevents unauthorized access to the Ciphernote application, meaning that whenever you launch Ciphernote, you’ll have to enter the master password to get in. The secret account key is required whenever you want to sign into your account from new devices; without this key, you can’t get in.

Please note that if you lose your master password and/or secret account key, there’s no way to recover it. For security and privacy reasons, doesn’t store such information. So if you lose your password, you’ll be locked out of your account and you’ll permanently lose access to all of your notes. Speaking about notes, it must be mentioned that Ciphernote provides support for text (which can be formatted), images, web links, to-do checklists, and tags.

At the time of writing this, Ciphernote for Windows is still in Beta. According to developer Oliver Weichhold, once Ciphernote for Windows graduates from Beta, work will start on Ciphernote for Android Beta. The overall goal is to get to a point when Ciphernote provides support for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Ciphernote will use the cloud to sync your notes across all supported devices.

The Ciphernote note-taking application is a must for anyone who cares about security and privacy. It uses a master password and secret key to protect your account, it uses encryption to safeguard your notes, and it doesn’t store your login information.

Pros

Right now, Ciphernote is available for Windows only; but the developer is working on adding support for Android, Mac and iOS. Access to Ciphernote is protected with a master password and a secret account. Ciphernote uses encryption to protect your notes; the encryption keys used to encrypt and decrypt your data are only accessible by you. You can take notes that include text, images, links, to-do lists, or audio recordings. And you can keep your notes organized by using tags.

Cons

Closing Ciphernote minimize the application to the system tray.
